Chapter 02

A timeline
of the culture.

Seven moments, from the consolidation of the Gadaa system to the artists carrying language forward today. This is a starting point, not a complete history.

  1. EVENT 01

    16th c.

    The Gadaa system takes form

The Oromo consolidate a generational governance system across the Horn of Africa, a rotating, term-limited democracy centuries before the modern concept.

  2. EVENT 02

    1880s

    Conquest and displacement

Oromo lands are incorporated by force into the expanding Ethiopian empire. Language, religion, and the Gadaa institutions are suppressed.

  3. EVENT 03

    1970s

    A cultural revival begins

Scholars, artists, and organizers work to document Afaan Oromoo, revive Gadaa memory, and reintroduce Oromo history to a new generation.

  4. EVENT 04

    1991

    Qubee is adopted

Afaan Oromoo formally adopts the Latin-based Qubee alphabet, unlocking literacy, publishing, and a global written presence.

  5. EVENT 05

    2016

    UNESCO recognizes Gadaa

The Gadaa system is inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

  6. EVENT 06

    2020

    The song remembered

Hachalu Hundessa, whose music carried the language forward, is killed. A generation reckons with what, and who, carries culture.

  7. EVENT 07

    Today

    The next carry

A global generation, Oromo and not, wears, reads, listens, and learns. Culture continues where it is chosen.
